Becoming a U.S. citizen by naturalization requires at least three years of residency with an immigrant visa or green card. The length of time you must wait before becoming a citizen by naturalization depends on whether or not you are married to a U.S. citizen.
You cannot have been outside of the U.S. for more than six months during this time of residency. Further, you must have been in the U.S. for at least 30 of the last 60 months (at least half of the time for the last three years).
Generally, a person cannot become a citizen by naturalization if he or she has been convicted of a crime in the last five years. Although we usually recommend waiting for five years after a criminal conviction to apply for citizenship, there are certain circumstances under which we can argue on your behalf at an earlier date. Contact us to discuss your individual situation and find out how we can help you.
